  2. The Birth of Heartache
    Joshua 7:20-21

"And Achan answered Joshua and said, "Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done: 21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it." NKJV

If honest with ourselves, most heartache is self-inflicted. We have no one to blame but ourselves for our rotten decisions and in most situations the rottenness of our decisions pour onto others. Achan is a typical example. The children of Israel were clearly forbade not to take any of the spoils of Jericho, but Achan could not resist. Either he thought God's command was not for him or he rationalized that just a little wouldn't hurt anything. Yet, his disobedience not only cost him dearly, it also cost his family and his people. When found out and confronted he gave the typical instruction of creating your own heartache: I SINNED because I SAW, I COVETED, I TOOK and I HID. Disobedience will bring pain every time. Achan had a choice before him. He could have walked away when he saw the spoils and been blessed, but instead he chose to disobey and thereby chose heartache. In hindsight, Achan regretted his decision and the paid it brought to himself and his family but the heartache had already begun.
