Matt. 18:7 "Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom temptation comes!"
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely amazing to me. It is necessary that they come, necessary. This world is not meant to be easy, to be simple. Adam was meant to be tempted, so are we. They reveal our lusts, our desires, they show us where our eye is looking. And either lead us to sin, or give God an opportunity to show forth His power in us.
Even more, the "Woes" of Christ are almost always used for the Pharisees, curses normally reserved for their wickedness is now given to those who tempt others to sin.
But this is not just the 'big' things, such as sex, drugs, and alcohol. This are the 'little' things and subtle things also, 'innocently' talking about someone to hear the latest gossip. Making and passing judgment upon someone when you are unaware of the situation or their motivations with others, thereby causing them to believe lies or join in.
One should pray to God, to seek His counsel and wisdom to know when our hearts do this, so that we can cease from it.
I've always loved Matthew 20:29-34. As Jesus walks by the two blind men, who are sitting on the side of the road outside of Jericho, they cry out, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!" The crowds rebuked them but they didn't care, they cried out even louder! In their limited abilities, they were going to do whatever it took to get Jesus' attention. And He stopped. They got His attention. When Jesus asks "what do you want me to do for you?" they say, "Lord, let our eyes be opened." And He did exactly that, He had pity on them and healed them. No longer poor creatures, sitting along the side of a dusty, dirty road. Now sighted men, who immediately became followers of Jesus.
